Hanoi Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake on Your Own
Updated October 28, 2026 · 3 min read
You can explore the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake without a tour. Start at the lake, loop through the trading streets north of it and return by a different lane. Use the Hanoi city-tour page only if you prefer a guide or transport.
A simple route
Begin on the lake’s northern side near the red Huc Bridge. Walk north along Hang Dao, cross towards Hang Ma and return through Hang Buom or Hang Bac. Street names preserve old trading specialities, but today traditional shops sit beside cafés, hotels and modern retail. The point is the changing street life, not completing a checklist.
Early morning is calmer and shows exercise around the lake. Late afternoon is livelier and cooler than midday. At weekends, roads around Hoan Kiem become pedestrian space; this is pleasant for walking but much busier. Traffic returns outside those periods, so cross slowly and predictably.
What to add
Ngoc Son Temple is the obvious optional stop, reached over the red bridge. Check its current hours and admission at the entrance. Allow extra time for coffee or a meal rather than forcing Train Street into the same walk; access there is controlled separately and can change.
When a tour is worth it
The hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus offers one- and two-day tickets and wider city views. A guided walk is better when you want architectural history and help reading the street names. Go alone when you mainly want atmosphere, photographs and freedom to stop.
